Cottage Details

Woodbell Lodge is located on a family run farm on the Wakes Hall Estate in the Colne Valley, north Essex. Surrounded by farmland and countryside, Woodbell Lodge forms a cluster of just 5 sustainably built detached lodges offering luxury and tranquility. The village of Chappel, which has a dog-friendly pub, is less than a mile away.

Three well behaved dogs are welcome for a small additional charge per dog.

Inside

Each of the lodges on the Wakes Hall Estate are designed around a New England style. They are discreetly located from one another and look out on to the Estate’s private lake.

Woodbell Lodge is a single story building, accessed via a set of steps up to a verandah. Easily accessible for wheelchairs inside, the finish is luxurious and the open plan living space generously proportioned.

The center of the lodge is devoted to a lounge, kitchen and dining areas. With plush seating in the lounge, and a well-proportioned dining table and chairs located adjacent to the kitchen, the space is functional and bright, as well as lavish.

Utilising the latest in eco-technology, the lodge is well insulated providing a comfortable atmosphere whatever the time of year.  Discreetly situated to the side of the entrance is a cloakroom and next to that a separate storage cupboard.

The two bedrooms can be found on either side of the lodge. One is furnished with a super king bed and ensuite with freestanding bath as well as walk-in waterfall shower cubicle. Bedroom two is equipped with twin beds and also offers an ensuite shower room.

Outside

The outside of the lodge is encircled by a wrap-around verandah, with views of either the countryside or the lake. The verandah benefits from a gate which can be kept closed for your four-legged friends.  There is garden furniture provided.

Nestled away at the side of the lodge is a luxury hot tub, sunk into the deck. Perfect to enjoy with a glass of bubbly as you relax into your stay!

Location and surrounding area

There are 500 acres of land including wood and farmland around the lodge which is just waiting for you to explore. The nearby willow woodlands are used to create wood destined to become cricket bats. There is also a fully stocked two acre fishing lake filled with carp and roach.

Although Woodbell Lodge is completely surrounded by rolling countryside, you’re only a short walk to the village of Chappel. Here you’ll find the Swann Inn dog-friendly pub for food and refreshments.

Colchester, with its castle and parkland, is only around 10 miles away.

Explore the local area and learn about its history by visiting the English Heritage Site of Lexden Earthworks, where you’ll find a series of iron age defences. Dogs on leads are welcome here. Or perhaps venture slightly further afield to the coast and visit Landguard Fort and the surrounding nature reserve, where dogs are also welcomed on short, fixed leads.
